Mayo deputy Dara Calleary as been appointed as the new Minister for Agriculture Food and the Marine.

It follows the sacking of Barry Cowen from the post by the Taoiseach last night.

Dara, aged 47, is a TD for Mayo since 2007.

He served as the Minister of State for Labour Affairs 2009 -2011

He became the deputy Leader of FF in March 2018.

Three weeks ago he was appointed Government Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Dept of Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture Sport and the Gaeltacht.

There was widespread consternation and anger that the Ballina based deputy was overlooked by Micheal Martin for a senior cabinet position when details of the new coalition government was announced.

Dublin based Jack Chambers has today been appointed as the Government Chief Whip.

Speaking to Midwest News this lunchtime the Chairman of Ballina Comhairle Ceantair of Fianna Fail Matt Farrell said Dara richly deserves to be a cabinet minister and he said the people of Ballina are delighted with his new appointment. Speaking on Midwest Radio last month, Mr Farrell had stated that Micheal Martin was not welcome to Ballina in light of his failure to appoint Dara as a cabinet Minister.

This lunchtime he extended a welcome to the Taoiseach to the "Salmon Capital of Ireland" - Ballina.

The Fianna Fail whip on Mayo county council, Ballinrobe based Damien Ryan, told Midwest News that Dara is an excellent choice in the Agriculture brief and he said it's a key portfolio for Mayo and Connaught counties generally.
