Castlerea District Community Policing Unit are advising that on foot of the new HSE covidtracker app been downloaded it appears that people are receiving telephone calls from persons pertaining to be from the HSE.
A conversation is had and then the caller is looking for address details to send out a test kit. Following this the caller requests your bank card details to debit a fee of €50. This is a scam. Do not give over any address or bank details.
The public are asked to contact their local Garda Station if they receive a call of this nature.
Gardai are reminding people that the Covidtracker App is secure and has not been the subject of any security breach.
The scammers are essentially code calling people.
It is obviously a very popular app and subject choice at the moment and these people are preying on that fact.
If people are aware of the potential for this type of fraud and keep their personal bank details secure at all times they will not be subjected to this type of fraud.
