One of Europe's oldest horse fairs has become the latest victim of Covid-19 with the cancellation of the Ballinasloe festival.

Organisers decided to cancel this year's event, which is traditionally held in October, because of the uncertainty surrounding Covid-19.

The Ballinasloe Fair attracts about 80,000 visitors to the Co Galway town for the week-long festival, including a major influx from England, providing a huge economic boost for the town.

The organising committee says the decision to cancel the festival was taken with regret, but that public safety is paramount.
