The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council has hit out at the absence of senior ministerial positions for the county.

Fianna Fail councillor Brendan Mulroy made the remarks on a social media post, where he said the only positive from yesterday was the appointment of Dara Calleary as Government Chief Whip.

Cllr Mulroy argues that the Taoiseach Micheal Martin has let Deputy Calleary and the Mayo Fianna Fail branch down by not making the Deputy Fianna Fail Leader a full senior Minister.

The Westport Cllr says “It was a disgraceful decision and a missed opportunity for Michael Martin to ensure delivery to Mayo.”

The Fianna Fail Cllr also pledged the support of the Mayo branch of his party to Deputy Calleary in the future.

Cllr Mulroy was also outraged that Fine Gael TD Michael Ring was not reappointed to a ministerial post.

The Cllr said that they “are from different political backgrounds but regardless of politics Michael Ring has constantly delivered to the people of the West and Mayo.”

He concluded by thanking Deputies Ring and Calleary for their service to the county and wished them well in the future.

This comes at the final stretch of Mr Mulroy's term as the Chairman of the council with an AGM to be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock.
