One of county Mayo’s most beautiful mountain walks / trails – the Bangor Trail in north Mayo is underutilised, a secret unknown to most walking enthusiasts within and outside the county.

That’s the view of Westport based Fine Gael Councillor Peter Flynn, who's highlighting the need to advertise the trail better, with easy maps and signage to ensure that it becomes a magnet for tourism into the area.

He was speaking at Mayo County Council’s Special Policy Committee on Tourism and Food earlier today.

The Bangor Trail is one of the county’s  earliest developed mountain trails, and is a 30km linear route, that had over many years deteriorated in places, but has been recently enhanced by Mayo County Council.

Cllr Flynn said he walked the trail last week with a group of thirty walking enthusiasts and he said only 4 of the thirty had ever been on the trail before.

He says it’s gems like this in the county that we need to put on the map and attract “staycationers” this tourists season to Mayo....
