A 43-year-old man has been charged in connection to the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

Stephen Silver of Aughaward, Foxford, Co. Mayo appeared before a special sitting of Castlerea District Court last night.

A large Garda presence accompanied Stephen Silver in the courtroom in Castlerea last night as he was charged with the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

The officer died after a violent incident in the town on Wednesday night.

The accused made no reply when charged, while his solicitor asked for all appropriate medical tests be done.

Mr Silver kept his head down for much of the proceedings but did exclaim that it was "unreal" and "I had no firearm".

Legal aid has been granted and he has been remanding in custody to appear at Harristown Court next Friday via video link.
