Fire crews remain at the scene this morning of a fire that broke out at Western Proteins in Ballyhaunis last night.
The Ballyhaunis unit were alerted to the incident at 22:49 last night and, given the close proximity to the fire station were in attendance at 22:55.
The fire was at an advanced stage and was through the roof of the building on arrival.
Support was immediately called and units from Claremorris and Charlestown responded while the aerial appliance and water tanker were also deployed to the scene.
The fire was quickly brought under control and was confined to the initial building on the site and did not spread to adjacent buildings.
However, the building has been completely gutted by the fire and Mayo Fire Service personnel remain on the scene this morning to dampen down.
While the crews remain at the scene of the rendering plant for animal by-products adjacent to Dawn Meats, gardai are advising the public to stay away from the area.
The Hazelwood road is closed this morning at the level crossing, as fire crews continue their operation.
There are no reports of injuries from the incident.
It was a busy night for fire crews in the area, as earlier that evening a unit of the service was called to a small gorse fire outside Brickens.
The blaze broke out at Ranaghard near the Cloonfad turnoff on the N60 Claremorris road and was brought under control at around 6pm.
Smoke was still smouldering from the embers of the gorse fire across the straight stretch of road on the N60 this morning.
