A 26-year-old woman was rescued while climbing the cone section of Croagh Patrick yesterday.

The Mayo Mountain Rescue team were tasked by Gardaí at half past one in the afternoon to assist a casualty who had sustained a head injury after a fall while on the Reek.

Her friend raised the alarm after the woman suffered a suspected broken collarbone and a full stretcher party made its way to the location.

The Coastguard helicopter R118 was also called out to the incident.

They were able to land below the cloud ceiling and their paramedic located the casualty on the path and provided first aid treatment.

The Mayo Mountain Rescue Team assisted the R118 helicopter and the casualty was airlifted to Mayo University Hospital for further treatment.

The rescue operation was stood down at shortly before a quarter past four yesterday afternoon.
