It will not be financially viable for a lot of pubs to reopen while Covid-19 restrictions remain in place.

That’s the view of the Mayo Chairman of the Vintners Federation of Ireland Alan Gielty of Gielty’s Bar and Restaurant Dooagh, Achill.

The publican says that the effect VAT rates and excise duty has on drink sales means publicans do not make money on a unit of drink and instead need to sell large volumes to make money.

This comes after the VFI issued forecasts that a typical bar/restaurant would face an 87% reduction in capacity to keep with Covid-19 health protocols.

The publican told Midwest News that it will take the lifting of restrictions in the form of a vaccine for a lot of the sector to get back up and running.
