The Green Party’s aim for government of achieving a 7% year on year reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is ‘unsustainable and unachievable’.
That’s according to Roscommon TD and former Minister for Climate Action and the Environment Denis Naughten, the conveyor of the regional group of Independents.
The Independent TD claims that if every driver took their vehicle off the road and walked everywhere, it would only reach the 7% annual reduction target for 14 months.
The Roscommon-Galway TD says that new Green solutions must account for the large rural community and agriculture sector in Ireland in contrast to the urban nature of continental Europe.
He told Midwest News that Green approaches adopted on the continent must not be ‘shoehorned’ into Ireland.
