In-patients at Mayo University Hospital have to wait between 7 and ten days after being tested for Covid -19 to get a result. That’s according to the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District,Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne.

The cathaoirleach says this time span is simply unacceptable, as he says at Sligo University Hospital, part of the same Saolta group of Hospitals the results of tests for Covid -19 can be ready in just three hours.

Michael Kilcoyne says in Dublin and Cork hospitals the waiting time for patients in the hospital to get a test result for the virus is six hours.

He claims it’s because these hospitals have labs available in-house, while Mayo tests are all sent to the central laboratories where the waiting time for results are now often ten days.

Cathaoirleach Kilcoyne claims that there is a machine idle at Mayo University Hospital that if utilised could provide faster test results, and he is calling on Minister Harris and the CEO of the Saolta Hospital Group to clarify why it is not being used.

He highlighted his concerns on Midwest News this morning.

Midwest News has contacted the Saolta group for comment.
