The death has occurred of former Roscommon County Councillor, Charlie Hopkins.
He was a Fine Gael councillor on Roscommon County Council from 1991 to 2009, and served as a Mayor of the county during that time.
He lived in Rooskey, Co Roscommon and was a native of Arigna. He passed away on Wednesday.
Councillor Liam Callaghan, who served with cllr Hopkins told Midwest News this morning that Charlie represented his community and county with distinction.
He described him as a strong voice for many groups and organisations but particularly his home area of Arigna, where he had fought a long battle in an effort to secure compensation for miners. He continuously sought to improve services in rural areas.
Cllr Callaghan has extended his sympathy and that of his fellow cllrs in Roscommon to Charlie’s wife Joan and extended family.
Due to government advice on the current Covid-19 pandemic, a private funeral will take place today (April 3). A memorial Mass for Charlie will take place at a later date.
