With many Irish people from across this region, stranded in countries around the world due to the failure of airlines to honour their tickets or now charging astronomical prices for one-way tickets, Sligo county councillor Thomas Walsh is calling on the Department of Foreign Affairs to write to all International Airlines requesting them to outline their flight schedules inward to Ireland.

Cllr Walsh told Midwest News today that the Dept of Foreign Affairs should carry out an assessment of Irish people whom have contacted our Consulates and Embassies and do not have capacity to return home due the availability of air travel or their financial circumstances.

In one instance, over the past number of days, two Sligo natives booked return flights back to Ireland from Dubai and on both occasions the flights were cancelled by the airline at short notice at a cost of €1600 for the first flights (one way) and €2000 for the second flights. The airline refused to refund the clients their money offering them a 12 month travel voucher.
