Dooagh National School in Achill has reopened today, after part of the school roof was ripped off by strong winds yesterday morning.

The school, which has almost 40 pupils, remained closed yesterday following the incident which occurred at about 9.30 in the morning, when a violent gust hit the school and ripped off the entire flat roof, and landed it in the adjacent football field.

Luckily no-one was injured in the incident, but the Principal Irene Gielty questioned what the criteria is for a status red wind warning , given that a status yellow wind warning  - the least severe - was in place in Mayo yesterday.

This morning, snow, sleet and ice caused problems for motorists across the West, with a number of vehicles reported as having gone off the road.

Mayo Co Co says the Windy Gap between Castlebar and Laherdane is closed due to snowfall, with diversions in place.
