Up to 1,700 Transition Year students from across the West are attending the AXA Road Safety Roadshow in Castlebar today.
The event, which is being held at the Breaffy Arena, is organised by Mayo County Council to educate teenagers about the tragic consequences of road collisions.
The roadshow has been running since 2007 and aims to encourage teenagers to adopt a sensible attitude when they start driving .
The students hear from family members of a deceased accident victim, car crash survivors and representatives from the Gardai, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, as well as medical staff who deal with the victims of road collisions.
Last year, 3 people lost their lives on Mayo roads, and 36 people were seriously injured.
Mayo Road Safety Officer Noel Gibbons says this event encourages young people to think twice about driving safely, and realise the consequences of taking risks on the road.
