Ballina Gardaí are investigating after a traffic counter valued at €2,300 was taken from Rathduff on the Corroy to Rathbaun Road in the middle of January, sometime between the 15th  and 22nd of the month.

Mayo County Council staff reported the theft to the Gardaí on the 22nd of January and describes the traffic counter as a grey box that was secured to a telegraph approximately 100 metres east of the Carrowmore Junction on the Corroy to Rathbaun Road.

The device is known as a Traffic Detection Device and is manufactured by Sierzega.

Mayo County Council Staff said they do not know why anybody would be interested in the traffic counter as it has a very specific use.

However, they are interested in getting it back.

This piece of equipment is used to obtain invaluable traffic information on accident prone sites on the road network.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Roads Design Office - Mayo County Council 094-9024444 at or Ballina Garda Station 096-20550.
