The new Bishop of Achonry is Fr Paul Dempsey, Parish Priest of Newbridge, Co Kildare.

The position has been vacant since Bishop Brendan Kelly was installed as Bishop of Galway almost two years ago

In the absence of a Bishop, Fr Dermot Meehan, Parish Priest of Swinford, has been acting as Diocesan Administrator.

The appointment of the new Bishop of Achonry was announced in the Vatican this morning.

49-year old Fr Paul Dempsey was born in Carlow and raised in Athy, Co Kildare.

He was ordained to the priesthood in 1997 and has served in a number of parishes in Kildare.

He was appointed Parish Priest of Newbridge in 2015, and has now been appointed by Pope Francis as the new Bishop of Achonry.
