Mayo's Michael Biggins has been elected new Chairman of the IFA National Rural Development Committee.
Mr Biggins - a suckler beef farmer from Glencorrib in south Mayo - has been involved in the IFA for over 20 years, and previously served as Mayo County Chairman and Vice-Chair of the Livestock Committee.
He will take over from the outgoing chairman of the National Rural Development Committee Joe Brady at the IFA's annual general meeting next Monday 27th January.
Michael Biggins says the challenges facing rural Ireland are immense, and having a strongly-funded Common Agricultural Policy and national supports were never needed more.
He says farm schemes play a huge role in supporting farm incomes, as well as the wider economic spin-off to the rural community.
