Roscommon Senator Maura Hopkins has withdrawn as a FG general election candidate for the Roscommon-Galway constituency.

Senator Hopkins, who recently gave birth to her first baby, released a statement last night, saying she had taken time over Christmas to consider her position.

As a new mother and a female public representatives based in a rural constituency, she said it would not be possible to balance the responsibilities and demands of her personal and professional life, and is therefore withdrawing her name as an election candidate.

Maura Hopkins served as a councillor on Roscommon County Council from 2014-2016 and as a Senator since 2016, and concluded that she hopes to remain involved in Fine Gael politics.

She wished her party colleague Councillor Aisling Dolan the best as she seeks to secure a Dail seat in the constituency.

Taoiseach Leo Varadker has thanked Senator Hopkins for her service to Fine Gael and to the people of Roscommon and Galway.

As the mother of a 4-week old baby daughter, he said he understands and respects her decision to put her young family ahead of public life.
