Blood donors across the West are being urged to make a special effort to give blood in the run-up to Christmas.

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is running extra clinics before the during and Christmas period to ensure they can meet the demand for blood transfusions in hospitals across the country.

The IBTS says the demand for blood is constant - even over Christmas and New Year, and donors are asked to make an extra effort between now and then to attend a clinic and make a donation, with blood clinics coming up in Ballina and Crossmolina.
