A Sligo Councillor has questioned why Search & Rescue helicopters cannot transfer patients between hospitals at night in emergency situations.

The issue was raised at this week's HSE Regional Forum meeting was Sligo Fianna Fail Councillor Donal Gilroy, who asked about the time limits on place for airlifting patients between hospitals at night.

Councillor Gilroy was informed that, under Irish Aviation Authority regulations, the Search & Rescue helicopters cannot be tasked to provide inter-hospital transfers after 9pm at night.

He believes a 24-hour service should be available for example to transfer a critically-ill child to one of the children's hospitals in Dublin.
