The recently installed pedestrian crossing at Springfield in Castlebar town can only be described as “a mongrel”, according to Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere.

The old pelican crossing at this location, was replaced recently by “a supposed to be” zebra crossing but no lines or raised ramp have been installed so, he claims, it appears to be “a bit of everything crossing”.

This pedestrian crossing serves one of the busiest locations in the town, serving five schools in the area with up to 2000 students, plus a busy supermarket, the green way, and several housing estates.

The councillor told Midwest News today that he visited Scoil Rafteri and Davitt College last week and spoke to both school principals, as well as several parents who were collecting children after school, and he claims all are concerned that unless this crossing is brought up to the standard of a proper zebra crossing a serious accident is going to occur.
