The removal takes place this afternoon of former Sligo county councillor Joe Shannon, who died suddenly at the weekend.
Originally from Cloonloo, Gurteen, in Sligo, Joe Shannon, who was in his 50s, moved to Jamestown, Carrick on Shannon, Co. Leitrim, where he became an active member of the local community.
Joe was co-opted onto Sligo County Council in 1982 after the death of his father, Joe Shannon Senior.
He retained the seat until 1991 and returned to the Council again in 2003 to fill the vacancy following the departure of Fianna Fail’s Eamon Scanlon, who became a senator.
Mr. Shannon was also director of elections for Deputy Scanlon’s 2007 general election campaign.
15 minutes of silence was observed at last night’s Ballymote/ Tubbercurry Municipal District meeting as a mark of respect to the late councillor.
He is survived by his wife Fiona, daughter Melissa and son Daire.
His remains will be reposing at his home in Carrick on Shannon today (Tuesday) from 2pm to 5pm and from 6pm to 9pm. He will be laid to rest tomorrow (Wed) after 12 noon Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Carrick on Shannon.
