Some householders in the Swinford area have been denied home insurance by insurance companies who are basing their refusals on inappropriate C-FRAM, government maps. As a result some home owners have been unable to sell their properties in the area, as the banks will not give mortgages if house insurance cannot be obtained.
This serious situation has been highlighted by Swinford based Fianna Fail councillor Michael Smyth.
He told this month’s Claremorris/ Swinford Municipal District meeting that he knows of householders living in areas at risk of flooding, according to the C-FRAM maps, that are being denied home insurance by multiple insurance companies.
The OPW has developed Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management plans to assess existing and potential flood risks, and even though insurance companies have been directed by the Minister not to use these maps for quotes, this is the practice being used by some insurers, according to councillor Michael Smyth.
He claims people living near rivers and lakes are being denied home insurance, or at least flood cover, without the insurers coming out to assess the risks for themselves.
