Plans to sink a ship for an artificial reef off the coast of Killala are making steady progress, with the deadline for the application for funding looming in October.
That's according to Crossmolina-based Councillor Michael Loftus who says an application will be made shortly for funding under the Clár programme, operated by Minister Michael Ring's Department of Community & Rural Affairs.
A ship seized by Customs Officers in 2013 is set to become Ireland's first-ever purpose built wreck-dive site.
The MV Shingle, which is docked in Dublin Port at present, has been offered free of charge by Revenue Commissioners.
Councillor Loftus is keen to take up the offer, and attract an influx of diving tourists to the Killala area as a result.
