Belmullet native, businessman Steve Togher is based in Hong Cong where he runs a very successful construction company.
He says Hong Kong is a great place to do business, despite the months of massive protests on the streets of the city.
The protests were triggered, earlier this year, by a controversial bill that would have allowed extraditions to mainland China, where the Communist party controls the courts, but the rallies have since evolved into a broader pro-democracy movement.
The city’s leader, Carrie Lam, said yesterday she will “immediately” set up a platform for dialogue with citizens and tackle complaints against the police, after a weekend of peaceful protests that she hoped would be the start of a return to calm.
Her offer has been dismissed by activists, however, as “a trap”.
Steve told Midwest Radio’s Tommy Marren today that for the most part he’s not witnessing the protests/ mass rallies, as they usually take place well outside the city centre.
