Two young sailors were safely rescued close Old Head in Clew Bay yesterday.

Just before 4pm the Beach Lifeguards on Old Head beach near Louisburgh raised the alert when they observed the crew of a small sailing dinghy about 1.5 nautical miles north east of Old Head in difficulty.

The Irish Coastguard Radio Station at Malin Head deployed the Coastguard Helicopter, Rescue 118, the Achill Island Lifeboat and the Westport Coastguard Unit to the scene.

A short time later, Rescue 118 lifted the two young sailors from the sea and they were flown to the Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar.

The Lifeboat took the sailing dinghy in tow to Old Head Pier where it was handed over to the members of the Westport Coastguard Unit. The Lifeboat returned to its moorings, refueled and was ready for service again at 7.10pm.

Met Eireann has issued a Small Craft Warning for all coasts today which means that winds of Force 6 or greater can be expected.

Shore fishermen and beach and coast walkers are also advised to be vigilant and careful as freak waves are always a possibility.

Achill coastguard say if you ever observe anyone in difficulty on our seas, rivers or lakes, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
