A former Christian Brother, with an address in Co Mayo, has been remanded on bail after he was charged with indecently assaulting a 14-year-old schoolboy while teaching in Cork in the 1980s.

65-year old Edward Bryan appeared at Cork District Court yesterday where he was charged with a single count of indecently assaulting the boy at the North Monastery secondary school between November 1st and December 31st, 1981.

Mr Bryan made no reply to Gardai when charged.

The prosecution is to go forward to Cork Circuit Criminal Court on indictment.

Defence solicitor Frank Buttimer said the book of evidence was required. He was informed that this would be available by early September.

No objection was made to bail with the condition that Mr Bryan continue to reside at his current address of Dugort, Achill Island, and that he notify Gardaí of any change of address.

Judge Olann Kelleher remanded Mr Bryan on continuing bail until his next court appearance on 2 September, and granted him free legal aid.
