It's hoped the new 9.2 million euro Hospice Unit in Castlebar will open to patients later this year, however, it depends on when funding becomes available from the HSE to staff the facility.

Local politicians and council officials were given a tour of the 14 bed facility last Friday, and public tours of the new unit, which includes day care facilities, are continuing again this week, from Tuesday to Friday between 10am and 4pm.

Anyone wishing to book a place on a tour can call the Hospice office in Knock at 094 - 93 888666.

The new facility will be run under the auspices of the Galway Hospice . Mary Nash, CEO of the Galway Hospice, says they are lobbying local politicians and the HSE intensely at present to secure the budget to see the Castlebar unit opening as soon as possible.

Speaking to Midwest News Ms Nash described the new Castlebar facility as  "a credit to the people of Co Mayo" .
