The Sinn Fein motion in the Dail this afternoon calling on the government to reject / scrap the Mercosur deal has been carried by 84 votes to 46.
Fianna Fail deputies backed the Sinn Fein motion.
Farmers are strongly opposed to the deal because of the amount of beef that would be allowed into the EU from South America, with thousands of farmers protesting outside the Dail yesterday to highlight their concerns. Mayo, Galway, Sligo and Roscommon farmers were among the protesters.
It remains to be seen what today’s vote will achieve.
