The sudden death on Saturday of a Ballina based detective garda has shocked and saddened the local community and his many colleagues within the garda force.
Detective Garda Martin Mitchell, Killala Road, Ballina, investigated many cases of serious crime over the years bringing offenders before the courts.
It is understood his unexpected death was due to natural causes.
Detective Garda Mitchell is survived by his wife, Helena and two daughters, Hollie and Jane.
He is also survived by his father, Padraig, brothers, Smiler and Brendan, his sister Tina as well as other relatives.
His remains will repose at his residence, Knockatinnole, Killala Road, Ballina from 3 pm to 8 pm today (Monday) and again tomorrow (Tuesday) between three and eight pm.
He will be laid to rest after 11 am Mass in St. Muredach’s Cathedral, Ballina on Wednesday in Leigue cemetery.
