Mayo University Hospital says they hope to resume a full schedule of surgery next week, after a number of procedures were postponed at the hospital this week, due to a problem with a water pump.

The failed water pump in the hospital's Sterile Services Department - where surgical instruments are sterilised for use in theatre - has led to the deferral of a number of procedures.

In a statement to Midwest News this afternoon, the Saolta Hospital Group said the failed pump was successfully replaced yesterday, and the equipment is being re-commissioned with a view to resuming a full schedule of surgery next week.

Patients who had their surgery postponed this week will be contacted early next week with a re-scheduled date.

A hospital spokesperson was not available for interview, but in a statement, management say they realise this has had a significant impact on patients and their families, and regret having to postpone procedures.
