A swimming ban has been put in place at three beaches in Galway, with an advisory notice on a fourth beach, due to high levels of harmful bacteria.

The Galway City Council has placed Do Not Swim notices at Salthill, Silver Strand and Blackrock beaches, and a warning advisory at Grattan Road beach.

The ban is being put in place as a result of high levels of intestinal enterococci bacteria being found during routine testing.

Swimming in the affected water could cause illness.

Galway City Council is investigating to determine the cause of the suspected contamination, and a further notice will be issued on Saturday, following further testing.
