Votes are being sorted in the local and European elections.

Ballot boxes are being opened since 9am this morning at count centres across the region.

Turnout in the elections up to 8pm yesterday evening was estimated at between 40 and 45%.

Votes for the 6 electoral areas will be counted at the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar, which is also the count centre for the Midlands-Northwest constituency in the European elections.

The ballot boxes for the Castlebar electoral area are being opened first this morning, and will be followed by boxes for the Swinford area.

Early tallies will soon be available, but a first count for the Castlebar area is not expected until about 4 or 5 pm this evening.

In Roscommon, ten boxes were opened in the first hour this morning - from across the three electoral areas, with early indications that Independent candidates are polling strongly.

At Leisureland in Galway, the boxes for Connemara North are being opened first, while in Sligo, tallies for the Sligo-Strandill electoral area are due shortly.
