New parking charges will come into effect in Westport town from next week.

To date, on-street car parking in Westport has been free, but restricted to one hour, while there's a charge for the town's carparks.

From next week, drivers will have to buy a "scratch & display" parking disc to place on the dashboard of their car, with different rates applying to the Pink Zone and Blue Zone.

The Pink Zone is the town core, where parking will be free for the first hour, but a disc will be needed after that, while the Blue Zone covers the remainder of the town streets and the Quay area.

Mayo County Council says the new parking arrangements in Westport are being introduced to ensure a greater turnover of parking spaces in the town.
