  • Mayo Volleyball player, Mikal O'Boyle has successfully made it to the Ireland National Volleyball team.

    The Knock based player debuted against Northern Ireland in The Watershed Arena in Kilkenny and hit the ground running as her side defeated their Northern neighbours 3-0.

    They followed up with a friendly against the Northern Ireland League all stars where they again tasted victory with another impeccable 3-0 victory.

    Mikal played the entirety of both matches where she put in a great defensive and attacking display as she was routinely switched from the middle position to the reverse hitting position at different junctures of the matches.

    After the game Mikal O'Boyle said, "It is a great honour to represent Ireland in volleyball. I will grasp the opportunity with both hand. At underage level, however Mayo volleyball club have a number of girls who have trials coming up with the under 17s and under 19s so watch this space."

  • Mayo volleyball captain, Mikal O'Boyle, has been made the new vice-captain of the Irish National team.

    The Knock based star has been to the forefront in the promotion of Volleyball in the west since she moved here from the United States.

    Mikal joined Michael D on Sunday Sport today to discuss her new role in more detail.

     

     

  • After two consecutive defeats Mayo Volleyball Club got back to winning ways with an impressive 3-0 victory over Garda Volleyball Club in Kiltimagh.

    The Gardai began with a flurry accruing a 4-1 lead. Once Mayo won the next score Jackie Prendergast accumulated 11 consecutive scores from setting. This forged the home side into an insurmountable lead. Despite spirited play for the visitors there was no looking back for Mayo as they won the set 25-16.

    Mayo maintained their composure in the second set despite a more competitive tussle as Orla Casby impressed again in defence and points from Eimear McNeive and Adriana Slovakova kept the home side in the lead throughout. Mayo won the set 25-18.

    Mayo started the third set slowly as the away side built a 5-1 lead. Despite leading much of the set Garda Volleyball club were out done in the end 25-22 thanks to some fierce but clinical hitting from Edel Nolan.

    This was a vital win for Mayo who end a poor new year streak and this victory puts them back in the top half of the table. 

    They are up next against Dalkey Devils in Kiltimagh on March 3rd.

    After the game Orla Casby said, It was a great win for us, we were fully in control of the game today. Finally after a few months of shuffling rotations and positions I think we’ve found our winning formula!

  • Mayo Volleyball Club got their season opener off to a great start with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Dalkey Devils in The Sports hall in St. Louis school Kiltimagh.

    The home side suffered an early onslaught as the south Dublin outfit built up a 10-5 lead. After Mayo regained their composure and pulled the game level there was much tit for tat scoring as the sides drew level on 6 separate occasions. At the end of the set Mayo narrowly won the set 25-23.

    From here on it was onwards and upwards for the Westerners as they made many defensive switches and Dalkey found it hard to score against Mayo's determined defence. Mayo ran out 25-14 winners.

    With two sets down the Dalkey ladies struggled for composure as the red and green built up a commanding 14-1 lead. Despite a late rally by the away side Mayo eventually won the set 25-15 and the match 3-0.

    Mayo's next volleyball league match is away against Cork at noon next Sunday 21st.

    After the match Mikal O'Boyle said, "We are delighted to get our first game in the National Division 1 season off to victory.

    We had a rough start but when we got into rhythm everything just clicked for us. Lets hope we can build on this victory in the weeks ahead."
