• Fianna Fail and Fine Gael TDs in Mayo are being urged to support a Bill which will come before the Dáil tomorrow (Wed) to provide greater protection for students renting accommodation.

    The Residential Tenancies Bill has been drafted by the Union of Students in Ireland, with assistance from Sinn Fein TDs Eoin O'Broin and Rose Conway-Walsh.

    The legislation addresses concerns raised about students and their parents not being able to access refunds, when they could not take up student accommodation due to Covid-19 restrictions.

    Over the past year, many students have found themselves unable to access their accommodation due to public health measures, but some have been denied rent refunds, and this Bill allows for prompt refunds in such instances.

  • Students are being urged to keep the number of people they meet up with small when they return to college.

    It's the start of the new semester for many colleges and ITs today, and a new campaign's been launched with the message of Keep it Small, Keep it Safe, Keep your Distance.

    The Acting Chief Medical Officer says the virus is spreading disproportionately among young people and is asking them to continue following public health advice.

  • A students union rally due to be held in Dublin tomorrow has been cancelled, due to the weather conditions expected as Storm Lorenzo makes landfall in Ireland.

    The Union of Students in Ireland had called on third-level students from around the country to join them in the capital tomorrow, to demand that the Government break some of the barriers to higher education  - such as college fees, and increasing accommodation costs.

    USI says students are currently facing costs of up to €10,000 per year to attend university, which is out of the reach of many.

    While tomorrow's rally has been called off, the President of the Students Union at NUI Galway Clare Austick told Midwest News that they're continuing to seek Government reforms in a number of areas....
