A Roscommon TD is calling on the Courts Service to ensure that court sittings are retained in Roscommon Town, despite plans to renovate the courthouse.
Major refurbishment of the courthouse is planned under the Government's capital building programme, which could take several years.
In the interim, renovation works are to take place that could take 2 months, according to Roscommon-Galway Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice.
Speaking to Midwest News today the deputy said it's imperative that the Courts Service rent an alternative building in Roscommon Town, rather than moving court sittings to neighbouring towns
Meanwhile, Roscommon FG Senator Maura Hopkins has met with the Minister for Justice this week in relation to the Courthouse.
She says the Minister informed her that he's been in contact the with Courts Service to point out that an alternative venue should be secured in Roscommon Town immediately, in order to allow for the continuation of court sittings in the county town.
