Work is expected to start within weeks on a major renovation and extension of the Ballyhaunis Community Hall - formerly known as the parochial hall.
The contract was signed on Friday with a building firm Cummins & Cummins, who will undertake the internal upgrade and extension of the 80-year old hall - including a new kitchen, extension to the stage, toilet and dressing room upgrades and a new heating system.
The hall, which was built in 1940, accommodates a variety of events and activities taking place in Ballyhaunis parish - including staging plays, hosting fitness classes, table tennis, choir practices, youth club, Parent & Toddler group and many other meetings and events.
In recent years, the hall has got an external facelift, but was still quite dated inside.
A Leader grant was secured for a significant internal upgrade, and a local fundraising campaign is also underway to raise the matching funds of €100,000 needed from the community.
The hall will be managed on a longterm lease by the Ballyhaunis Community Council, and will be known as Ballyhaunis Community Hall.
A major fundraising campaign is now underway to raise €100,000 locally. People can buy a brick or make a donation towards the project, and a GoFundMe page has been set up.
