Mayo Drugs Unit

  • Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit together with members from Ballina Garda Station seized €3,000 worth of suspected heroin from a man at Foxford Railway Station on yesterday.

The drugs were detected as part of an intelligence led operation.

A man in his 40s who was travelling by train was searched and found in possession of suspected heroin.

He was arrested by Gardaí at Foxford Railway Station at 4.45pm and detained at Ballina Garda Station.

He has since been released without charge.

A file is to be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions in this matter.

  • There is an urgent need for at least a doubling of the number of gardai assigned to the Mayo Garda drugs unit, that’s the view of the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District Michael Kilcoyne.

The Cathaoirleach expressed his view at the county Joint Policing Committee meeting.

He says that the scourge of drug misuse across the county is increasing and he believes that there is a need for targeted police work to effectively combat a growing problem.

There are up to 15 gardai assigned to the Traffic Unit in Mayo at present, and the Cathaoirleach says that is significantly more than the 5 that are assigned to the Drugs Unit in the county.

Cathaoirleach Kilcoyne has been telling Midwest News  why he is not satisfied with a 5 strong Garda Drugs Unit in Mayo.
