There is an urgent need for at least a doubling of the number of gardai assigned to the Mayo Garda drugs unit, that’s the view of the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District Michael Kilcoyne.
The Cathaoirleach expressed his view at the county Joint Policing Committee meeting.
He says that the scourge of drug misuse across the county is increasing and he believes that there is a need for targeted police work to effectively combat a growing problem.
There are up to 15 gardai assigned to the Traffic Unit in Mayo at present, and the Cathaoirleach says that is significantly more than the 5 that are assigned to the Drugs Unit in the county.
Cathaoirleach Kilcoyne has been telling Midwest News why he is not satisfied with a 5 strong Garda Drugs Unit in Mayo.
