Mayo Boxers

  • Six Mayo boxers will compete at the National Senior Cadet Open Championship Finals in Dublin tonight.

    The boxers will also be in line to be selected on the team for the European Junior Championships in Romania at the end of May.

    The Mayo boxers are Beth Lloyd of Ballyhaunis at 54kg, Amy Carey of Geesla at 63kg, Peter Maughan of Ballyhaunis at 80kg, Mark Duffy of Charlestown at 75kg, Eoghan Lavin of Ballyhaunis at 70kg and Bernard McDonagh of St Anne’s Boxing Club at 85kg.

  • Two Mayo boxers are through to the National Elite finals at Dublin’s National Stadium tomorrow evening.

    Ciara Ginty from Geesala produced a fantastic performance in her Elite semi-final against a worthy opponent in Clodagh Green from the Crumlin BC in Dublin last night.

    It was a high tempo bout in which the Crumlin boxer pressed forward for the majority of the three rounds.

    Ciara used her skill and experience to counter the attacks and claimed the victory by a unanimous decision. Ciara will be in the Elite final tomorrow night at the home of boxing in the national stadium in Dublin.

    Shannon Sweeney from the St. Anne’s Boxing club in Westport is also through to tomorrow night’s finals after she outpointed defending light-fly champion Chloe Fleck in the opening bout of the session.

  • Two Mayo boxers came home with gold medals, following an international tournament in New York at the weekend.

    16-year old Peter Maughan from Ballyhaunis and Owen Lavin from Swinford were guests of the Erne Boxing Club from northern Ireland, and were selected for the Gloves Up, Guns Down International Box Cup tournament in Newburgh, New York.

    Both Peter and Owen brought home gold in their respective weight categories.
