Jimmy Bruen Shield

  • Preparations are well under way in Westport for the finals of the AIG Cups & Shields tournament which will take place over the coming weeks.

An established championship venue, the Fred Hawtree designed course on 260 acres of the former estate lands of Westport House is currently being prepared for the arrival of over 200 of the top amateur golfers in the country.

The tournament under the control of the Golfing Union of Ireland will attract in excess of 5,000 visitors to Westport over the 6 days of both tournaments including players, their families, officials and spectators and is seen as the traditional end of season extravaganza for club golfers.

Work has been ongoing for the last number of weeks with members and volunteers making themselves available in order to guarantee a fitting arena worthy of hosting our national championships.

This is the first major GUI tournament since Rory McIlroy won the Close Championship back in 2005 & all in Carrowholly are excited to showcase the quality golfing facility that is on the shores of Clew Bay to the new generation of elite amateur golfers.

Caolan Rafferty, Walker Cup panellist & West of Ireland winner was the first competitor who has qualified for the national finals to register a practice round.

He'll be representing Dundalk Golf Club in the Jimmy Bruen finals and was welcomed to the first tee by Westport Golf Club's Harry Gillivan.
