EMA

  • ¬†We'll find out this afternoon, the verdict from the European Medicines Agency, on the safety of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.

It follows reports of rare blood clotting events in the United States.

The impact of the decision will be discussed at an Oireachtas health committee hearing later today which will also discuss the vaccine rollout plan.

Around 600 thousand single dose Johnson and Johnson vaccines arrived into the country last week.

But they aren't allowed to be used until the EMA makes a decision on its safety later today, following reports of rare blood clot events in the US.

Environment Minister Eamon Ryan has stated that he thinks that the Johnson and Johnson vaccine will get the go ahead to be used here.

The impact of the decision will be discussed at an Oireachtas Health Committee later today which will also discuss the vaccine rollout plan.

The Committee will hear that 15 pharmacies will begin administering Covid-19 vaccines "towards the end" of this month as part of a trial ahead of a wider rollout of pharmacists involved in the vaccine programme.

Seven more mass vaccination centres are set to open this week, bringing the total in operation to 26.

The EMA will hold a briefing on the Johnson and Johnson vaccine in Brussels at 4pm Irish time.
