  • The entire region is mourning the death of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

    The Charlestown native was killed in the line of duty last night in Castlerea.

    Colm was a long serving member of Charlestown Sarsfields and his family are steeped in the GAA community.

    Earlier this year, Colm presented the inaugural Delores Horkan Memorial Shield - an East Mayo minor football trophy named after his mother, who was a passionate Charlestown supporter.

    Many well-known personalities in Mayo and Sligo GAA extended their sympathies this morning on social media.

    Stephen Healy of Charlestown GAA who played alongside Colm and a close family friend says it’s a harrowing time for the community.

  • The funeral arrangements have been announced this evening for Detective Garda Colm Horkan who was murdered in Castlerea on Wednesday night last.

    His remains will lie in repose at the Family Funeral Home in Horkans Charlestown on Saturday afternoon.

    Removal from the family home will take place on  Sunday morning to arrive at St. James’ Church, Charlestown for concelebrated Funeral Mass at 12 o’clock followed by burial in the adjoining Cemetery

    The Funeral Mass will be broadcast live on https://www.mcnmedia.tv/?s=Charlestown and Midwest Radio.

    The family are appealing to the public  to adhere to current HSE Guidelines and Restrictions at all times.

    A guard of honour took place in Ballaghaderreen this evening as Detective Garda Colm Horkan's remains were brought through the town.

    He worked in the area for many years and hundreds of people lined the streets.

    A man remains in Garda custody in connection with the 49-year-old's murder in Castlerea on Wednesday night.

  • The investigation into the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan is progressing as speedily as possible, a court has been told.

    Sgt. Mark Mahon told Judge Deirdre Gearty at Harristown District Court this morning that reports are being prepared and the book of evidence is being compiled as quickly as possible.

    He was responding to a query from a solicitor for Stephen Silver with an address at Aughaward, Foxford, Co Mayo, who is charged with the murder of Detective Garda Horkan in Castlerea on June 17th.

    The 43-year old was due to appear before the court by video link.

    But defence solicitor Marina Moran of Gearoid Geraghty & Company said that the defendant was still receiving at the Central Mental Hospital.

    It is the fourth time that Silver has been deemed unfit to appear by video link at Harristown District Court.

    Sgt. Mahon said that the investigation was proceeding and was ‘very active at the moment’, with reports being awaited.

    “The book of evidence is being compiled as speedily as possible,” he said.

    Judge Gearty remanded Silver in custody for two weeks to appear before Harristown District Court on August 21.

  • A month's mind mass is being held today for Detective Garda Colm Horkan who was shot while on duty in Castlerea.

    Detective Garda Colm Horkan died in Castlerea on June 17th, and was buried in Charlestown after a state funeral.

    Today's ceremony will be held at the GAA grounds in Charlestown at 2pm.
