• Roscommon is one of 7 counties that have no registered in-home childminders.

New figures show that there are only 81 registered in-home childminders in the country.

Since 2016, there has been a legal requirement for childminders to register with Tusla if they are caring for four or more pre-school children.

And from February of this year childminders have to register if they're minding 7 school-aged children or 6 mixed-age children.

    Registration costs €40.

According to figures in the Irish Times, the number of registered childminders dropped from 90 in 2018 to 81 in the second quarter of this year.

The number of registered childminders in Mayo fell from 4 last year to 3 this year - in Sligo there are 4 registered childminders in 2019, and 13 in Galway - the 2nd highest number in the country.

It is estimated that one in 10 children under the age of 12 are cared for by childminders. Parents of children who access registered childcare can avail of a subsidy under the Affordable Childcare Scheme, but not if their children are with unregistered minders.

However, registration could potentially bring some childminders, not currently registered for tax, into the tax net.
