Cathaoirleach Kilcoyne

  • It’s strongly rumoured that the number of garda Chief superintendents nationally is to be halved, and garda divisional units are to be amalgamated, and according to the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District Michael Kilcoyne, the unconfirmed developments are causing local concern.

The Independent councillor says it’s understood that the Mayo Garda division will be subsumed into a significantly larger division to include counties Roscommon and Leitrim.

The speculation he says has been neither confirmed nor denied by the dept of Justice, but he insists it is a retrograde step, that would go against policing policy in the EU and in America.

Cathaoileach Kilcoyne told Midwest News Editor that local councillors have not been informed or consulted on any changes and he will be raising local concerns at next month’s reconvened Joint Policing Committee Meeting in Castlebar.
