As part of the National Hurling Development Plan, Galway's Jeffrey Lynskey has been appointed as Hurling Mentor for Mayo GAA. A member of the Liam Mellowes Hurling Club in Galway City, Lynskey is a Coaching Tutor with Connacht GAA and is also a leading coach within the Galway Underage Hurling Academy system.
The Hurling Mentoring system is being rolled out in 22 counties throughout Ireland, with leading coaching people from the McCarthy Cup counties being appointed to facilitate the growth of hurling in their respective adopted counties. A Hurling Mentor Support Group has recently been set up within Mayo GAA, which will support Jeffrey in his role going forward. This support group met recently - with the main areas targeted being PR and communications, volunteer recruitment, coaching workshops and primary school/club links. It is also hoped that a club twinning system will be formulated between clubs in Mayo and in Galway for challenge and coaching purposes, in the coming months.
The mentoring system will run over the coming years, with Lynskey reporting back regularly to Croke Park on the developments and needs of the hurling community within Mayo GAA. The following are the members of the Mayo GAA Hurling Support Group: Jeffrey Lynskey (Group Secretary), Adrian Hession (Group Chairman), Brendan Geraghty (Group PRO), Billy McNicholas (Games Manager), John Hopkins (Board Chair), Luke Fitzmaurice (Board Sec), Christy Phillips (Juvenile Chair), Brian Finn (Juvenile Sec), Ml Bracken (Caiseal Gaels), Peter Cassidy (Tooreen), Pete Higgins (Ballyhaunis), John Kennedy (Castlebar), AP Barrett (Belmullet), Seamus Hurley (James Stephens), Des Joyce (Ballyvary), Ml Varley (Moytura), Jim Hogan (Westport) & Dom Greally (East Mayo Coaching).
