Joe Hennigan elected as Vice President of IABA
Joe Hennigan has been elected as Vice President of the Irish Athletic Boxing Association.
The Mayo man who was boxing team manager at the Rio Olympics was ratified at yesterday’s annual Convention in the National Stadium.
After three hours of rancorous exchanges, the meeting broke up in chaos without the agenda being completed.
A decision by IABA president Pat Ryan to adjourn the convention without announcing the result of the election of officers - which is done by postal vote - may turn out to be his last official duty, as he was decisively beaten by former president Dominic O'Rourke 194-102 for the position.
Joe Hennigan has today told Midwest Sport that the exchanges yesterday, was not good for the sport of amateur boxing.
Elsewhere, Johnny Carey of Geesala Boxing club and Frank Ward of Castlerea were both selected as members of the board.
Joe Hennigan is thrilled with his role but admits the organisation has to move on from its past.
