Mayo Volleyball Club win opening game of Division 1
After securing promotion to Division 1 on their first season Mayo Volleyball club knew there would be an escalation in standard as they faced a strong Santry outfit. That said neither side could have envisaged the rollercoaster battle that would finish in a Lazerus style comeback for the home team.
The Mayo ladies encountered a baptism of fire as the visitors gave them a demonstration of life in Division 1 dispatching the home side 25-20 in the first set
The Dubliners didn't ease up in the second set building a commanding lead early on. Despite a late comeback from Mayo, a confident Santry won the second set 25-23.
The Westerners were now 2 sets down knowing one more would result in their first ever defeat. A gargantuan task laid ahead to turn the game around.
In the third set Mayo ironed out most of their errors and with some clinical serves particularly from Grainne McNieve and Louise Daly the red and green kept themselves in the hunt winning their 1st set 25-19.
The fourth set was certainly the most intense as Mayo built a commanding lead, at one stage leading 22-14. However Santry came back with 9 unanswered scores pulling ahead. There were then tit for tat scoring as the set went into a nerve-wracking tie breaker. With everything at steak and against the run of play Louise Daly struck the winning score bringing the match into the maximum 5 sets.
The Mayo ladies ever improving on discipline and execution were almost flawless in the 5th as Orla Casby and Mikal O'Boyle defended many Santry balls while Carla Spitzley led the charge in terms of hitting. The set ended with Mayo winning 15-6 thus winning an edge of seat match 3-2 in what was a great advertisement for the sport of volleyball.
This now brings Mayo impeccable tally to 15 wins in a row as they face The Garda Volleyball Club next weekend in their second match.
