- Details
The Mayo Football League has elected Gerry Sweeney as its new chairperson. Gerry was a founding member of Bangor Hibs in 1995 and part of its hard working committee that led to the club purchasing its own grounds and building a two story clubhouse at Ballybeg Park which now includes an Astro Turf pitch as well. Gerry played for Hibs in its early years but found the role of secretary more suited to his talents. He was first elected to the Mayo League in 2000.
Gerry is married to Pauline and have two grown up sons Gary and James. The family is steeped in football with Gary currently employed by Manchester United in its scouting department. His late father Patrick was actually at the opening of Norwich City’s ground, Carrow Road in 1935!
Gerry lived in Lincoln as a youngster and has been instrumental in forging the special relationship that the Mayo league has with Lincoln City which will see Mayo’s Young Player of the Year, Lee Lyons spend some time there in the next few weeks.
Gerry says he will strive to continue the excellent work of his predecessor, Padraig McHale and says he is delighted to be taking over the reins at this time. “Padraig McHale has brought the league forward in so many aspects. He has been one of the most dedicated and hard-working chairmen in the history of the league. He should be extremely proud of the hugely positive contribution he has made to the game in Mayo” He also said that he was looking forward to continuing working with the members of the League Management Committee who he described as a fantastic bunch of people who are totally dedicated to the sport in the county.
Gerry said that he is looking forward to attending as many matches as possible when the league kicks off on March 12th and wished all clubs well in the coming season.
Gerry is already well known to all the administrators of the clubs in Mayo having served as League Registrar since 2007. Gerry said “he has a deep respect for the many people who work tirelessly behind the scenes across the county, the people who spend a lot of arduous hours ensuring all the players are registered correctly to just one task.”
Gerry Sweeney will take up his new role immediately. Sean Molloy has been elected Vice Chairperson while John Durkan was re-elected secretary, Tom McDaniel was re-elected treasurer and Kieran Gallagher was re-elected PRO.
